Bexley Team
The Bexley Team ministry was originally formed in 2012 and included the two Anglican churches in Bexley Village - St John the Evangelist, and St Mary’s and was later expanded to include the neighbouring parishes of Joyden’s Wood and North Cray in August 2018. Each of the four parishes remains a ‘parish distinct’ but we work together as a Team.
St Mary the Virgin, Bexley: www.stmarysbexley.co.uk
Visitors to this 900 year old Church will find a sacred space packed with historical interest: As the ancient Parish Church, St Mary's established St John's as a daughter church in the 1880s to support the growing Victorian population of Bexley Village. Even though St John's became a parish in its own right in the 1930s, we have retained a close friendship with St Mary's which is evident in the dynamic between our congregations and ministry team. St Mary's is a member of Inclusive Church and Gypsy, Roma & Traveller Friendly Churches. The church has step-free access throughout.
St James, North Cray: www.stjamesnorthcray.org.uk
St James is the jewel in the crown of the Footscray Meadows, situated in the sanctuary of a walled churchyard between the North Cray Road and the famous Five Arches Bridge. The church is packed with an intriguing range of historical features: Be sure to check out the Pilgrim Window by the South Altar, and the wood carvings in the chancel and sanctuary, which include, among other scenes, vivid depictions of the Seven Works of Corporal Mercy and the Harrowing of Hell. For those who are able, the journey from St John's Bexley to St James North Cray constitutes an idyllic walk which takes in Bexley Cricket Club and the sun-dappled banks of the River Cray. This beautiful little church really comes into its own when celebrating Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals, especially in the Summer months.
